I’ve never been a fan of using taxpayer funding to pay for memorials. True, there are certain events we should always remember, but we are a nation of memorials, and our tax dollars have funded so many of them, they’ve actually lost their meaning. We’re to a point where we forget the real meaning and history of certain events, and we think spending a few million on a memorial justifies our willful amnesia. So it is with this asshole.
Assemblyman Dov Hikind, whose mother survived the death camp at
Auschwitz, said yesterday that only Jews persecuted during the Nazi
reign should be honored at a Holocaust memorial in Brooklyn.Hikind said even though 5 million people from other groups –
including gays, the disabled and Jehovah’s Witnesses — were killed
along with 6 million Jewish people during the Holocaust, the memorial
in Sheepshead Bay should be for Jews only.“To include these other groups diminishes their memory,” said
Hikind, as he stood next to his 89-year-old mother, Frieda. He said he
is not against a memorial to honor the other groups — as long as it is
somewhere else.“These people are not in the same category as Jewish people with
regards to the Holocaust,” Hikind said following a press conference at
the memorial. “It is so vastly different. You cannot compare political
prisoners with Jewish victims.”
I was born Jewish, and I think this guy is a hypocritical jerk. He discounts millions of lives as essentially not as worthy as Jews who were killed in the Holocaust. An additional five million people. Five million lives lost to senseless, twisted, sadistic Nazi violence, and he apparently thinks they’re just not as meaningful as Jews. Not only that, but taxpayer money will be used to fund this memorial, and I’m fairly sure it’s not just Jewish taxpayer money that is going to be used to fund this particular monument.
Dov, you’re a jerk and a hypocrite. You want other people’s money to pay for a monument dedicated only to those of whom you approve, and you’re disgusting. You’re a Jewish supremacist, and that makes you no better than any other supremacist out there. You’re nothing more than a bigot, and your constituents should shun you as such.

Personally, as one who also shares your heritage, I would like to see a memorial to the utter downfall of the Nazi pricks who performed the Holocaust. Perhaps a statue of Hitler blowing his own brains out in abject defeat of his attempt to exterminate everyone who didn’t meet his insane definition of worth with Goebbels, Göring, and Himmler lying in a cowardly suicidal heap about him?The Holocaust needs to be remembered in its entirety to educate and prevent its recurrence and no one killed by the Nazi regime should be considered less worthy of memory just because they were born under a priest, pagan or atheist, rather than a rabbi, especially in New York City, USA.

As it turns out, the oldest (103 yrs) surviving male concentration camp survivor is one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which is not at all what one would expect, given their relatively tiny numbers. One nit to pick. 13 million were killed in the Holocaust, six million of which were Jews, that leaves 7 million others.Jews were the single largest block of victims, but that in no way lessens the others who were also victims, nor their right to be remembered and mourned.

I just want to say that you are a true human and until we start thinking of ourselves as humans and not Jews, or Whites, or Blacks, or Hispanics etc. etc. ,we will never grow as country or planet and we will never see true liberty. I totally agree with what you wrote and I abhor any kind of racism (supremacism) of any type. Oh and by the way, Janet Napoliatano would consider me a terrorist since I support the US Constitution as it was written by the founders of this country. Fucking ridiculous eh?
