President Barack Obama criticized the defense industry and a free-spending Congress during a speech in downtown Phoenix Monday.
In
a speech to tens of thousands at the National Veterans of Foreign Wars
Convention, the president told veterans our tax dollars were being
wasted like America was still in the Cold War.
So Congress wastes billions on every other type of pork project imaginable, and the Magic Marxist doesn’t bother with critique. But DEFENSE pork! That’s bad! We’re not in the Cold War anymore!
Well, OK. I can agree defense strategies are and should be different now that the Cold War has ended. However, I’m one of those that can plainly see a resurgent Russia that will gain influence in its region gradually… slowly… Do we need to dismantle our entire system of defense because we don’t view Russia as a threat?

Klinton obliterated our Military Intelligence community under the same pretext, saw it first hand. Liberals are incapable of understanding the necessity of a strong military in peace time, forcing us into the cyclic grabasstic excersize we have been subjected to since, well, forever. IMHO, the best way to stay out of the next war is to be utterly and indisputably prepared for it. Sometimes that is not even enough, but at least we wouldn’t send the good guys and gals off to battle hamstrung with equipment and training shortages. Pardon me if this is cynical, but what better way to justify pacifism then to predispose our armed forces to defeat by under-training and under-equipping them, ala-Carter..the Idiot in Chief.–Endyr

I completely agree with you. I was in the military during the Clinton years as well. I know what you are saying. That is not to say that there aren’t MAJOR problems with our procurement process and that politics don’t play a major role in funding. They do, and our budgeting could be streamlined and money could be spent a lot better.

I think it is a huge mistake to move away from a conventional army, and focus solely on insurgency and counter-insurgency operations. While the Soviets may not be massed along the Fulda Gap any longer, there remains the question of both the Chinese, and the North Koreans, who have huge conventional militaries. While it is an attractive notion that most future conflicts will be of a “low intensity” variety, I just do not think it is wise to abandon air superiority and conventional armaments in favor of high tech gee-whiz gizmos that replace boots on the ground.
