The story went around yesterday about a little boy in Delaware who was suspended for bringing a utensil that happened to contain a knife to school, so he could eat his lunch. I was so angry at this, I wanted to cry! I couldn’t even blog about it, because the thought of sending this tiny little kid to a school for delinquent malcontents for 45 days because he brought his favorite utensil to school so he could eat lunch – no malice, no threats issued, nothing – made me beyond upset.
Six-year-old
Zachary Christie was so excited to become a Cub Scout that he brought
his camping utensil to school. The tool serves as a spoon, a fork and a
knife, and Zachary wanted to use it at lunch.
What
Zachary didn’t know was that the gizmo violated his school’s
zero-tolerance policy on weapons. And now the Christina School District
in Newark, Del., has suspended the first grader and ordered him to
attend the district’s reform school for 45 days.
Little Zach’s parents fought back for their child – like any good parents should. And today they won.
The Christina School Board voted unanimously to amend the Code of
Conduct for the 2009-2010 school year to allow individual schools
and school administrators more discretion when deciding disciplinary
actions for students in Kindergarten and First Grade. (read
the amendment)
Zachary was asleep when we got home from the meeting, but I’m sure
he will be THRILLED to hear the news when he gets up in the morning.
Thanks SO MUCH to everyone all over the country, and even around the
world, who have sent messages to Zachary and signed his petition.
Knowing how many people have been supporting him has been invaluable
to his self-esteem and his happiness.
Unfortunately, while the school board did act to ensure that the
youngest children in the Christina School District won’t fall victim
to zero-tolerance policies, they did nothing to address older
students. There is no evidence that zero-tolerance policies do
anything to reduce school violence, and there is significant
evidence that these policies harm students. It is our hope that by
working with the school board and local lawmakers, we’ll be able to
overturn and do away with all zero-tolerance policies and put into
place policies that will take into consideration a student’s age,
intent, disciplinary history, and other circumstances that arise on
a case by case basis.
Additionally, it is not only the Christina School District that is
using these draconian policies. We have heard stories from families
all over the country who have had children who were victims of these
policies. We will work with advocacy groups and educators anywhere
we can to make sure that zero tolerance policies are no longer used
in our schools.
They’re right. The battle is won, but the war is still raging. All across the United States, senseless, stupid, simpleminded school administrators are applying ZERO COMMON SENSE policies to innocent little kids such as Zach…
…such as Matthew Whalen…
…such as Marie Morrow…
These school administrators need to stop being lazy. It’s all about laziness. They don’t feel like applying common sense to a situation because it requires effort. It’s much easier to just send an innocent little child to reform school and tell the parents that “zero tolerance” dictates they must do so – no exceptions.
Fight them, parents!
