Ran across this story on the Greek fiscal crisis on CNBC this morning, which contained wisdom of the year, as far as I’m concerned.
“You can’t take a country that’s over-borrowed and make it more creditworthy by lending it more money… They’re throwing Greece further and further and further in the hole by not addressing the problem directly and properly.”
Hey, Congress! Are you listening?

What’s amusing is that the citizens of Greece are pissed off that they, get this, actually have to become responsible for their spending. There was a poll that stated that 55% of Greeks (although they were aware of the economic problem) did not want to see any change in government spending (i.e. a change in their goodie packages). I mean, God forbid that one actually live according to their means or anything. That would be a freaking travesty of the first order!

Mat, I was in Belgium when the EU passed that travesty of a rescue package, and CNN Europe was interviewing Greeks about it. Their attitude was that of entitlement – as if somehow they deserved that rescue package – as if somehow their membership in the eurozone entitled them to be as fiscally irresponsible as they wanted at others’ expense! It was so repulsive, I had to turn it off. One guy being interviewed actually said, “Well this is why we joined the EU in the first place!!!”
It’s enough to make you want to kill things!
